Question by Penny: First time overseas, do i need travel insurance?
I will be traveling to Singapore & Malaysia this Sept and it will be my first time over seas. My friends were telling me about travel insurance. Should i get it? how do it work? do you just list the items your taking or do you pay an overall fee that covers everything from electric goods to your whole suitcase?

Any tips or help is appreciated! Thanks
@Doug: thank god i’m going with someone who travels a lot! lol your freaking me out :p

You should set up a travel insurance for potential injuries. You think it wont happen but if it happens you will regret not having it. I always had my mother set it up for me so I dont know the details. Call the travel agency about it. I think there is a fee for travel insurance. Its good to have just in case something does happen. Have fun traveling to Malaysia and Singapore. You will love it there.

  • You pay a flat fee and the policy covers what it covers (read the terms & conditions).

More important than lost luggage or trip delay/cancellation insurance is medical insurance. Check with your regular medical insurance to find out if it covers you in Singapore/Malaysia. If yes take proof of coverage with you. If no or not sure then get trip medical insurance, which is cheap and sold by airlines & travel agents.

  • If you can afford it, yes, get the insurance. How familiar are you with being a target for thieves or scams. Make sure that a taxi drivers dashboard ID is the same guy driving. If ANYONE is too persistent, get away form them fast. People, generally, are good, so don’t let paranoia destroy ya. Remember, if it IS too good to be true, then it likely is a con. Knowing currency exchange, and the culture, as well as what the culture produces best is.
There’s many articles regarding con artist strategies, et al.. Have a look at them before you go. They shouldn’t be that hard to find online. Ignorance is not bliss when it comes to this and being safe.
May your trip be great for you.

  • it’s always a good idea if you cannot afford to replace the cost of the trip -ask your travel agent for suggestions.
