Table Mountain upgrade: New universal access walkway welcomes wheelchairs and families

Improving access to the summit of Table Mountain has always been a priority for locals who know how tricky that rocky terrain can be for many visitors.

While the views from the top are world-class, the rugged ground hasn’t always been easy to navigate if you aren’t on two steady feet. That officially changed this week.

In a move that makes this world-renowned site even more of a treasure for the millions of tourists who flock here, South African National Parks and the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company have officially pulled the ribbon on a brand-new Universal Access Walkway.

This isn’t just another path. It is a thoughtfully designed route at the summit specifically built to make sure that nobody gets left behind at the Upper Cable Station while the rest of the family explores.

Whether you are pushing a pram with a sleeping toddler, using a wheelchair, or perhaps just finding that those old hiking knees aren’t quite what they used to be, this walkway is for you.

It is about dignity and the simple freedom of being able to head out toward the edge of the plateau independently to soak in those Atlantic Seaboard views.

The project is a major win for inclusive tourism in South Africa.

For a long time, the summit experience for visitors with mobility challenges was often limited to the immediate area around the shop and the cafe.

This new addition opens up more of the mountain’s natural beauty, allowing everyone to experience the unique fynbos and the sheer scale of the National Park safely and comfortably.

It is heartening to see our iconic landmarks evolving to reflect a modern South Africa where public spaces are truly for everyone.

The partnership between SANParks and TMACC shows a real commitment to making sure our natural heritage isn’t just a postcard we look at, but a place we can all physically stand on and enjoy.

So, if you have been hesitant to take your elderly parents or a friend in a wheelchair up for a sundowner because of the rocky paths, now is the perfect time to book those tickets and head up together. The mountain is waiting, and now, it’s truly open to all of us.
