The Hyde Johannesburg offers a bohemian aesthetic with a laidback vibe
I think it speaks to the strength and skill of the hospitality company when stepping foot inside the Hyde Johannesburg, you’re not only comfortable with that South African hospitality, but you also get an immediate sense of their identity.
I had not planned to stay at the Hyde Johannesburg hotel at all until a delayed flight from Perth meant I would only be able to catch my flight to Cape Town the next morning.
However, as life would have it, I ended up at the hotel and was glad I did because by the time I checked out, my only thought was that I would have liked to have stayed there longer.
Despite my short stay, I feel like I got a true understanding of the bohemian aesthetic and laidback vibe of the hotel, which felt like it had been transferred from the lively Rosebank neighbourhood.
Upon arrival, walking from the Gautrain stop to the hotel, you’re treated to the vibrancy of what makes Johannesburg special. The atmosphere, the friendliness and thriving nightlife all contribute to the allure of the city, which in turn, speaks to the allure of the hotel.
The Hyde Johannesburg has 131 guest rooms that balance urban sophistication with bohemian, earthy design. The Hyde is redefining what it means to work, stay and play, which is why it seems to have connected with business travellers, digital nomads, and holidaymakers.
I ran into another guest and struck up a brief conversation, during which we touched on the hotel. She had shared that she loves staying at the hotel when in town, as its thumping atmosphere was a perk.
This was on display when, even during a late-night check-in, guests were caught in deep and voluminous conversation. If you’re looking for a quiet stay, it can be disorientating, but personally, after a long flight, the atmosphere felt rejuvenating.
Many people were enjoying the perks of the Proud Mary all-day eatery and wine bar.
Featuring curated cocktails and a wine philosophy that champions small-batch, local, and independent wineries, Proud Mary offers an enticing selection of unusual wines and classic cocktails, all at reasonable price points.
For those on the go, Proud Coffee serves skilfully crafted barista coffee, aromatic teas, and freshly squeezed juices alongside an irresistible selection of artisanal pastries and handmade chocolates.
The breakfast at the hotel was an enjoyable experience, while the hotel’s breakfast offerings could use improvement. Proud Mary, on the other hand, offers a wide variety of meals, which are highly recommended.
If there is one thing the hotel staff could do better, it is to articulate the difference between the Proud Mary breakfast offerings and those of the hotel.
I was impressed with the sleekness and ambience of my room upon arriving. I stayed in the VIP room featuring a deluxe king-sized bed, a dedicated desk and a make-up area.
The room, which spans 30–37 square meters, offers boho chic design and ultimate comfort, ideal for two guests. My bed was so comfortable that I almost immediately just wanted to curl up in it.
I also appreciated the little touches of room, such as a welcome handwritten note, and a dessert which had been especially plated with my name. You can’t help but feel welcomed.
It does warrant mentioning, but I appreciated how my bathroom and toilet were in separate rooms. It does come down to personal preference and space, but that small detail didn’t go unnoticed.
I also got the opportunity to visit Nine Lives, which blends international speakeasy culture with modern craft mixology and a daring, after-dark energy. Even if you aren’t staying at the hotel, this is a must-visit.
The cocktails were delicious, and the service was great. I loved how there were many people of various cultures and backgrounds just milling about and enjoying their evening.
Cape Town establishments have an unfortunate habit of intentionally/unintentionally alienating some non-white guests, but at Nine Lives, it felt relaxing and hospitable.
In an interview with Glamour, Hyde Johannesburg Rosebank General Manager Jessica Redinger said that they wanted to create a space that’s just as much for locals as it is for travellers, and after my stay, I can confirm that that is the case, and they hit the nail on the head.
If that’s something that speaks to you and you are looking for a more lively stay, then the Hyde Johannesburg may be exactly where your next stay should be.
