Johannesburg vs Cape Town: a TikTok user's take on the best South African city for tourists

When it comes to South Africa’s renowned cities, the choice between Johannesburg and Cape Town can sometimes feel overwhelming.

American TikTok user Cedoni Francis (@cedonifrancis) recently shared her experiences on travelling Mzansi after spending two weeks exploring these vibrant cities.

Francis started by easing any apprehensions about safety when it comes to exploring the country.

“I felt pretty safe, but I’m not an easy lick. I didn’t get robbed, I left with all my belongings, I didn’t experience any violence.”

Her dismissal of safety concerns echoes a sentiment that resonates for many – being prepared is the key to enjoying any journey.

Here are some of her insightful thoughts to help you choose between the two cities.

The urban vibe of Johannesburg

Francis describes Johannesburg as a city that truly captures the essence of urban life.

“If your favourite cities to visit are New York, Chicago, London, Tokyo, or Singapore, you’re going to love Johannesburg,” she says.

With its rich cultural scene, Johannesburg boasts an array of museums, trendy restaurants, and nightlife that goes well into the early hours.

For those who thrive in a bustling city environment, Francis suggests that Johannesburg is the place to be.

“That’s a place to go if you like a city vacation, you like to rip and run the streets, you like nightlife, and you enjoy a nice, stiff drink,” she explains.

She even found the food scene to be superior in Joburg, where she enjoyed the local nightlife filled with the sounds of amapiano music.

The natural beauty of Cape Town

On the other hand, Francis describes Cape Town as a haven for nature lovers.

“If your favourite city is an outdoorsy type of city, like LA, San Francisco, or Bergen, Norway, places where you go just to see nature, I think you will love Cape Town,” she says.

Cape Town is renowned for its stunning landscapes and outdoor activities.

From hiking Table Mountain to visiting the adorable penguins at Boulders Beach, the city offers breathtaking views and experiences that are hard to match.

Francis reflects on her time in Cape Town, stating, “It was gorgeous. God absolutely snapped when He made South Africa. It was so, so, so beautiful.”

The verdict: which city to choose?

Ultimately, Francis found joy in both cities but leaned towards Johannesburg for its urban appeal.

“I just preferred Johannesburg because of the more ‘city’ aspect that it gives,” she shares.

She compares Joburg to New York, highlighting its urban energy, while Cape Town reminds her of a mix between LA and San Francisco, with a more laid-back vibe.

For those considering a trip to South Africa, Francis has some reassuring advice.

“Do not let people fearmonger you. You’re going to be fine if you’re not an easy target.”

She emphasises that both cities have their unique charms and are worth visiting.

“Overall, a 10 out of 10 trip, I would go back to Johannesburg and Cape Town in a heartbeat,” she said.
